How to Grow Alfalfa Fodder Seeds

  • Soil Preparation : Use well-drained loamy soil (pH 6–7.5) and mix vermicompost before sowing.
  • Sowing : Spread seeds evenly on the soil surface, press gently, and allow 5–10 days for germination.
  • Watering : Keep soil moist but never waterlogged.
  • Sunlight and Climate : Needs full sunlight and grows best in warm, temperate, and subtropical regions.
  • Fertilizer Care : Apply vermicompost every 15 days. Organic inputs and bio-fertilizers like Azospirillum and Phosphobacteria improve growth.
  • Harvesting : Take the first cut after 90 days, then harvest every 30–40 days. Plants usually grow 60–90 cm tall.

  1. Vermicompost is best balanced nutrient fertilizer used basally. The plant will get better results with the periodic supply of vermicompost once in 15 days.
  2. Other than Vermicompost Bone meal, Rock phosphate, Panchagavya, Fish amino acid, Seaweed liquid, Humic acid will improve the growth and yield of the crop.
  3. Bio fertilizers like Azospirillum, Phospho bacteria and VAM will promote the plant growth by solublizing the nutrients from the soil to available form.
