Growing anything in a hostel balcony usually ends in disaster because nobody waters regularly. Somehow these survived our chaotic routine. We planted them in broken paint buckets mixed with cocopeat and compost from the canteen waste project. Germination started unevenly around day 10. The interesting part came later — once the leaves matured, the corridor smelled slightly herbal every evening after rainwater splashed the pots. One roommate from Andhra kept saying it reminded him of village temple festivals. Another friend crushes tiny leaves between fingers before exams claiming it helps calm nerves. Not scientifically proven obviously, but funny to watch. One downside is that crowded pots reduce airflow quickly. A few lower stems yellowed until we thinned the seedlings. Still one of the most memorable plants we’ve tried in student housing.

More seeds germinated than expected so transplanting became messy. Not exactly a complaint though.

It doesn’t behave like ornamental nursery plants that demand constant attention. Feels more natural and forgiving. Planning to shift some into longer grow bags next month before peak summer arrives.

Seeds are fine but beginners may struggle understanding depth and watering frequency. Mine improved only after watching videos online.

Bought these because my paati used to keep marikolundu near the doorway during festivals. I honestly expected poor germination because the packet looked simple. Instead, most seeds woke up after soaking overnight and using shallow trays with loose soil. The fragrance started appearing surprisingly early, even before the plants grew tall. During late evenings the whole balcony gets this soft herbal smell that feels nostalgic rather than overpowering. One issue though: heavy watering caused fungus in two spots, so drainage matters a lot. My grandmother visited last month and immediately recognized the scent before even seeing the pots. That reaction alone made the effort memorable.

Not instant germination. Took almost 16 days for half the seeds. Once established, leaf growth became dense.

Coimbatore summer dried my spinach completely but these held on with only evening watering.

One section near standing water developed fungal patches, so airflow definitely matters. Apart from that the plants required very little fussing. We now save seeds from mature plants for the next season instead of buying locally.

Compact enough for containers but still spreads nicely. Slightly sensitive to waterlogging though.

We added these beside jasmine rows mainly to test whether the fragrance would attract pollinators. Didn’t expect such healthy germination in sandy soil. The seedlings remained compact initially, then suddenly branched heavily after consistent monsoon drizzle. Workers walking near the patch keep rubbing the leaves because the scent lingers on fingers for hours. One strange observation: goats ignored this crop entirely while chewing nearby weeds. Very useful. A few plants became leggy in shaded areas, so spacing matters more than I assumed. Overall the patch now looks lush and textured compared with plain herb beds.
